Out of Control

I love this little family of mine. I really do. But this morning I had a realization- our home is out of control.

With all that has been going on this year I have fell short. I have done what I can- but many times it was the bare minimum. Unfortunately the kids have developed attitudes and personalities that I'm having a hard time with now.

I know this is my fault. If Super Nanny were here she would point out that it was my lack of parenting that has caused all this. Even though I had a good excuse it doesn't make up for it.

Now I have to figure out how to gain control of this house again.

I can use all the advice/input I can get so PLEASE give me some ideas!!!

Family Pictures!

Yahoo! It's only been 3 years since our last picture and I've been planning on new ones for months! We finally did them today and they were FREE! Thanks to Uncle Zach for coming along and taking them. AS I scrolled through literally hundreds of pics the one above was one of the last ones to show up (yet one of the first to be taken). I LOVE IT! :o)

I'll post more later but for now I need to go feed the kiddo's!

S.A.D.

I don't want this post to be sad. I just thought I would post my thoughts on S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Dissorder). It is REAL. And this year I am feeling it a TON.

Honestly, in past years I have had a day or two where the gloom of the weather puts gloom in my soul. But this year - when the sun is gone behind the clouds I just can't get up! Maybe it's due to lack of tyroid or even lack of spleen (you never know!) but whatever it is- I don't like it.

The other morning it was FREEZING outside (literally) and I bundled up just to feel the rays on my face for a moment or two. I think it helped.

Today I was out of bed before 9am. This is a miracle for a 'non-school' day. Since the kids are old enough to pour their own cereal I try to stay snug in bed as long as I can. But today the boys are at a sleep-over and Paris and I have some errands to run. Besides, another storm is on the way and today is supposed to be the "warm before the storm". I'm hoping to get some sun and ENERGY.

I was looking online for lamps. they make them to help combat S.A.D. but they're EXPENSIVE. Gilbert suggested a pass to the tanning salon. Do you think that's his way of telling me I look a little pasty!? :o)

Something new

I've been busy. Really!? Yes, really. I've been trying to get some Christmas projects finished up which is why I decided to change my blog now. If I wait any longer it probably won't happen.

Most of you know I was in Houston in Oct. I had lots of fun and made many great contacts to grow this little company of mine. The most exciting thing (that I can't really talk a lot about yet) is that a very well known name in my industry is interested in working with me on some projects. That's about all I can say. But it's AWESOME and I'm EXCITED!

So between that and some other smaller projects for some other companies to get a little extra Christmas cash- I'm swamped.

In other news it appears that we may FINALLY be getting family pictures taken sometime next week. We have everything set- outfits, location, photographer- we just have yet to set a time.

And lastly, our little Paris is doing much better. Only faint marks remain on her legs. She's been to school everyday this week. Today she was looking forward to going to PE!

Well that's about it for my update. Hopefully I'll be back soon! :o)

HSP

Last wednesday our little Paris went in for a T&A (tonsil and adenoid -ectomy). Everything went well and we were looking forward to restful and QUIET nights. Unfortunately we haven't had that yet.

On Friday Paris developed a rash on her feet. Assuming it was allergic reaction we just waited. by Saturday morning she couldn't walk and the rash had worsened. She also was complaining of a stomachache. We weren't sure what was going on but knew we needed to take her to the ER.

As soon as we got to the ER the ER Doc said "I can tell you what it's not- an allergic reaction. But I'm not exactly sure what it is." Nice. Paris was pretty lethargic and out of it. We hung out in the ER for a little while until the Pedeatric Hospitalist came down to see. He walked in the room took one look at her feet and said "She has HSP." Umm, what's that? He said she had classic symtoms but to be sure he wanted to know if she had the rash on her bum as well. He asked if he could look and sure enough there were spots there too. Gilbert and I looked at eachother surprised. We had no idea they were there. The Dr. then said "It's pretty cool when you say something is going to be there and it actually is. Makes me look pretty smart." He is a great pedeatrician- funny and fantastic with kids.

You can read about HSP here. It's pretty intense. After the Dr. told us a little about the condition he told us we needed to decide whether we wanted her admitted now or take her home and wait for her to get worse. I was thinking "WHAT!?" So I asked- how bad is this? He then told us that the pain is bed enough that they'll have to give her morphine and that if we take her home he's certain we'd be back in the next day or two. After seeing how much Paris was already hurting we decided to go ahead and take her upstairs to the peds unit. HSP is not super rare, but it isn't very common either. Doctors and nurses as well as med students kept coming in from all over the hospital to look at Paris and get an idea of symptoms and signs of HSP.

Paris had a rough night in the hospital. She was given 1 mg of morphine almost every hour and it only helped for about 30min. Around 3am she got sick, but after that she slept for 4 hours. once it was actually morning the Dr. came in and told us that since she hadn't had morphine for a few hours they wanted to try and treat her with other pain meds. The thought was that if those meds took care of the pain we'd be able to take her home. Luckily they worked and her stay in the hospital was a short one. However, the battle is not over.

Paris is still in a lot of pain. She mostly has pain in the stomach. She also woke up this morning with tiny spots up her legs and on her arms (we expected this). The hard thing is the meds only last for about 3 hours and she can only have it every 4. So I spend lots of time snuggling her and rubbing her tummy. In the hospital they have a chart for pain so the Dr's and nurses know how bad it is. When Paris is hurting she'll tell me "Mom, it's an 8". the hardest thing is that she absolutely HATES the medicine. Getting her to take it is a battle in itself.

We have a wonderful ward and have had so many calls of concern and offers for help. It is so nice. we're hoping that this doesn't last too long but we're gearing up for at least a week. I've talked to a few people that have had children who've had HSP. It is such a crazy illness and definately one I don't wish on any child.

Right now she's sleeping next to me in bed and guess what? She's not snoring. And, shen she'd sleeping she's not in pain- so this is what we like. :o)

p.s.- if you read the link on HSP you should know that it is not very likely at this point that Paris will have any lasting problems from this.

Christmas huh!?

Halloween is exactly one week away and then all the focus goes to CHRISTMAS. My kids have already been scouting out the shelves at Wal-Mart and the ads from the mail with their latest wishes. I know I say this every year but this time we're going LITE! Y'know, LOW FAT!? There just isn't aot of spare change around these days for extra "fluff". I am determined to show my kids that you don't need a ton of cool expensive presents to have a nice Christmas. Unfortunately my husband's opinion differs from mine on this. He think we should get them 'cool, expensive gifts' anyway. This time I hope I WIN.

I remember modest Christmases when I was a kid. And yes, there were times that I'd wished for more. But i got over it. I survived. And I grew to realize that life isn't all about the stuff you have. My kids may not realize it now. Or in a few years. But someday they'll come to the same realization. At least I hope they do.

Good Readin'

If you haven't read already, take a moment and read THIS. Now read THIS.

There has been a lot of uproar in our area (I'm sure yours, as well) regarding Elder Packer's talk at Conference. The more I hear things on the new or read things on FB the more I want to scream. So I thought I'd scream it here.

The reason I listed cjane's blog is because I LOVE IT! She's normal, just like you and me. But she has the power to reach thousands of people and she does- with her testimony secure. She has reached critizism too. I don't think what she writes is doctrine- I take it for what it is. She's a woman in the gospel and these are her thoughts. However, I do know that she seeks the Lord's guidance and I keep that in mind when I read too.

Back to Elder Packer. And keep in mind- this is just my opinion. He speaks through the Lord as well. None of his words were meant to hurt. In fact, as I heard his talk I felt as if they were meant to heal. It is unfortunate the events in the world with those that have been mistreated and ended their own lives. However, it wasn't their gender attraction that ended their lives, it was the actions of those who were influenced by and follow the adversary. People without love in their hearts who felt it necessary to condemn other children of God. Elder Packer was simply stating what the church has believed all along and what those how are LDS (including those with same gender attraction) already know. This was not anything new. Also, I am sure that the talks written and prepared by our General Authorities are not a surprise to God or our Prophet. So all the hatred towards Elder Packer should stop. If you must direct it towards anyone, direct at the church as a whole- we can take it!

I have always held a stance as cjane wrote- just not as eloquently. And I have always supported homeosexuals. Now when I say 'support' I mean: They can do what they want. My view of the gospel has always been the same. But if someone makes that choice in life- so be it. Love them anyway. Heck, if we can love our enemies, those who have done wrong to or against us, then why not love those who have never hurt or bothered us.

Now to address the word 'choice'.Yes, I think it is a choice. Just as choosing to rob a bank or smoke a cigarette. We all have been born and brought to this world with agency. There was a few other talks during conference regarding agency- good ones. I have also been made aware of the power of Satan this past year. More so than I have ever realized. The way someone can just flip the switch and change their life for worse is the power of Satan. The way someone can turn their back on everything they once knew to be true is the power of Satan. He will not stop until he wins. And he often starts small. My feeling (and this is only mine) is that those who feel they have been BORN with same gender attraction are under the powerful influence of Satan. But that does not mean we should hate them.

There are those that whole-heartedly support and those that are hatefully against. I think there can be and IS a middle ground. I am still FOR Prop 8 because I believe in the Family entity as established by our Father in Heaven. But I also believe that we are to love ALL people regardless of skin color, religion, or gender attraction.

Way to cjane for reminding us what is most important- the relationship between GOD and OURSELVES.

And now I'm done.

(I am never too ashamed to admit when I'm wrong and because I'm just a backwards type of person I had the logistics of Prop 8 backwards- I fixed my mistake. But for those who caught it before ME- so sorry!!!)

School Days

I love my children. More than I could ever imagine. But it's been a tough year and a loooong summer. I was prepared for it and although it had it's tough moments, I survived. But oh, how sweet it is that my children (all 3) spend at least a few hours everyday at that wonderful brick building a few blocks away.

Some people may think it sounds 'mean' of me to say that. Or think it sounds as if I don't care about my children. However, just the opposite is true. When they get home from school they're actually glad to see me. The last time that happened was when they came home after I had been in isolation.... 2 months ago! They need the break each day and they need to go somewhere were they can learn, play, and grow. And I need the break each day to---
do whatever I want!

I can't believe the resurgence of energy I have had in the few days that I've had since they went back to school. Slowly I'm becoming me again. Just this morning I read a post on a blog that I follow and the woman was talking about becoming herself again after a tragic accident a couple of years ago. I had to take Paris for her shots the other day and the Dr. asked how I was doing. This is the Dr. that actually got the ball rolling with all my 'stuff'. I told him I was doing lots better. He reminded me that it takes a lot of time for our bodies to get back to normal and that it's not like I had the flu, or a broken arm- I had cancer. True that. Even though I'm thyroidless and spleenless I'm still ME inside. And slowly but surely I'm starting to feel like EM again.

Thank you Westside school! :o)

C'mon Toby, sing it!

I wanna talk about Me, I wanna talk about I, I wanna talk about number 1, oh me, oh my...
I like talkin' 'bout you, you, you, you once in a while, but every now and then...
I wanna talk about ME!

Ok, I can sing every word to that song but once I start typing it and I can't remember. And I'm way too lazy to look it up online to make sure i got it right. So if I didn't - oh well.

It's my birthday today. That's pretty much all I have to say about it. It was a normal day- Sunday. You know, crazy times trying to get the kids ready for church. Church. Chaos once we get home. Trying to relax when everyone demands your attention. Waiting for a tired husband to come home from work.

The "Brotha's" came over. That's my inclusive word for Zach, Trevor and Evan. They even brought cake and ice cream. And of course, laughter. LOTS of laughter.

So even thought it was a 'normal' day- it was a ncie day too.

And then my husband took over getting the kids in bed so I could veg.

Happy Birthday to ME!!!

me me me me meee!

I got a frantic email today from the editor of a magazine. No, it's not a beauty magazine.
I had sent a CD with a bunch of pictures and for some reason they didn't copy to the CD. The mag is going to print so she needed some pics NOW!!!
I don't have many pics of me- especially none that are recent. And all the pics I do have are two low a resolution to use in a mag. So my kind neighbor took a few snaps of me.
Thank goodness it was a good hair day. I also took liberty with photoshop.
I'm not embarassed of my scar- but since it was going to be in a magazine I decided to take it out. Also cleared up my medically-induced acne-covered face.
Not too shabby if I might say so myself. :o)

Poop

The title desicribes my life- TODAY. I say 'today' because I know that it could change on a daily basis.
I've been pretty optomistic and taking things in stride lately (Thank you, tiny little pill I pop each morning). But somtimes life turns around and smacks you right in the face.
COuld it be worse? definately.
But does that mean it's not 'poopy'? Nope, not at all.

On the bright side- the hubs is taking the kids camping for a couple of days.

Aaaahhhhhh!

TO blog or NOT to blog....

Everyday I log onto my computer and scroll through my fav's list I see the title "Life according to Em..." and it haunts me. Ugh. How long has it been since my last post? Does anyone even read this? Would anyone notice if I never posted again? And today I thought- I WOULD. I would notice all those things and it would (and does) drive me nuts. So here I am posting...again.

When I think of blogging right now I can't think of anything to write about. Lots has been happening but when I replay it in my head it all seems negative. But actually LIVING my life seems pretty great. So why would I want to post and make it seem as if things are horrible when they're not?

I registered the kids for school. ONly 2 weeks left of summer vacation. I can't wait for them to go back to school. Yesterday I was daydreaming of all the things I can accompish when I don't have munchins running around my feet. Besides, they are SO READY! Fifth, Third and Kindergarten. WOWZERS!

Last night Gilbert spent some time on a job website. Oh, he still has a job- he just wants a different one. Good time to think about that, huh? Anyway. While I was sewing he was yelling things like "New Hampshire. What about New Hampshire?" and "Oh, here's one I could do in Indiana. Could you move to Indiana?" and "Colorado Springs. This one's pretty good and it's not too far away." All the while Preston was screaming from his room "WHY CAN'T THE KIDS CHOOSE!?" I had to reassure him that we're not going anywhere (yet?) and that until he has a job that pays the bills he can't decide anything. :o)

Oh, it's good times. Today I am rearranging Logan's room, taking the kids to the library, going to a quilt show, cleaning all the toilets (3) and vacuuming the ENTIRE house (including the stairs). If the kids were at school I'd be done already. But as it is, they are home. Hopefully I can have this all done before bedtime.

Happy August, Ya'll! :o)

News:

I guess it's time to offically announce that we will NOT be moving to the southern border states afterall. Gilbert recieved his letter the other day. Unfortunately it all has to do with the circumstances of Gilbert's previous job. Oh well.

While the initial shock was difficult to hear, we both feel good about it. Only a couple of weeks ago we decided to pray about this job to see if it was still the right direction our family was supposed to be moving in. Although Gilbert was really excited about this prospective job opportunity when he got the letter he said "Well, I guess that's our answer."

So for now we're staying put and trying to decide what we're going to do with the rest of our lives. :o)

11

Today Gilbert and I celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary.

Yes, I know that today is also Pioneer Day. But 11 years ago I didn't. Nor did I care. It's worked out nice living in Utah because normally Gilbert has the day off.

This year it fell on a Sat. Normally he's working but since he hurt his back he has a few days off.

He brought me breakfast in bed- french toast (cooked MY way- which believe me, is much better than HIS way)

Then we bummed around the house all day.

Uncle Evan came over to babysit and we grabbed a quick bite to eat before running off to see Eclipse. I told Gilbert I would tell everyone it was my idea, but really, HE wanted to see it. :o)

Happy Anniversary, Babe!

Who, Me?

It's monday. Another week. We're already 1/2-way into July. Where has my year gone? The kids are back and 'normal' is no where to be found.
Gilbert and I flew the coop for a quick getaway to SoCal over the 4th weekend before the kids came home. I was restless from being cooped up and 'officially' shouldn't have been out yet. But since I was spending less than 2hrs. in contact with any one person (unless you count Gilbert, and my BFF on the drive down- both of whom consented to being subject to my radiation) it was no big deal. Spent a day on the beach- it was WONDERFUL! Only burned two small places on each of my feet that managed to escape sunscreen. Spent another day at Disney w/out the kids. Whoa! It was perfect disney weather- overcast. Keeps the crowds away. Walked all day until my legs wouldn't go anymore. Had dinner with the BFF and her fam. Laughed a little too long and a little too loud (Hello!? We're talking about ME here.) It was perfect. Gib and I called it an early anniversary. We're celebrating 11 years on Pioneer Day.
Now I'm home and started on thyroid meds and praying that I start feeling like ME soon. I know it'll take a while to get regulated but I didn't think it would get worse before it got better. I feel like a zombie. I don't like it. I feel like I'm walking with my feet in mud- except it's not my feet in the mud, it's my brain. I want to sleep the days away until it all passes and I can wake up feeling normal again.
I have the right to feel this way. I've been pretty understanding throughout this whole ordeal and taken everything in stride. But it's getting old. Yes, deep down I can talk myself through and I know it'll all come to an end- but I don't always feel like talking myself through (side affects I can assume). So today we're keeping it simple. Only the bare minimum will get done today and I will veg all day if I have to. It's not horrible- it's just not ME.

I miss ME.

1/2 way done and a recipe!

Today is a good day. I'm half-way through my isolation period and the end is in sight. Even better- I'm officially allowed to go off my diet (not that I haven't been sneaking anyway). I've been craving lots of salty goodness so for lunch I made chili-dip. Thanks to my neighbor who had a couple key ingredients and was willing to doorbell ditch them for me. :o) Anyway, i thought I'd share it with you. This isn't a meal, more of a snack. And definately one you don't want to have all the time. But it's quick and easy and a great 'superbowl' or game-day food.

2 cans chili (whatever kind you prefer)
1 sm. can diced chiles
1 can olives (sliced)
1 brick cream cheese (I use low-fat or fat free, not that it matters)
a bunch of shredded cheese ( a cup, maybe more. The more cheesy goodness, the better).

You can do this in the microwave- I recommend a glass-type microwave safe bowl, or on the stove- med/low heat, or in a crockpot- dump and go!

throw it all in there and stir it up. Heat until melted gooey goodness. Serve with tortilla chips.

It's that easy. And it's that yummy.

Now I'm going to go eat and finish the last few chapters of Jodi Picoult's latest novel 'House Rules' which is FANTASTIC as always!

Not fun

125 mc of I-131. Found out yesterday that it's 10 DAYS of isolation instead of the 5-7 I was originally told. It's definately more than the 4mc I had a couple weeks ago. I was told to suck on lemon drops to avoid radiation sitting in my salivary glands. After a dozen lemon drops I couldn't suck another one. My tummy felt yucky all night last night and nothing sounded good to eat except a ham and cheese sandwich. I wasn't supposed to eat one, but did anyway. This morning my fresh strawberries taste funny. I'm not happy. The thought of another lemon drop makes my stomach turn. :o(
Also my bum hurts from sitting on my tail bone all day yesterday. It's hard not being depressed when you're 'STUCK'. At least I know it's not forever.

Marvel or DC

I've decided that I should be a comic book character. I just found out that I'll need the larger dose of I-131 and it's going to be administered on thurs. Don't worry, Gilbert is taking the kids to Boise for the week that I'll be in 'isolation' (sounds so much better that 'quarantined'). Anyhow, it got me thinking what a cool comic book character I could become. You know, a normal person living a normal life in a normal world when all of a sudden- a large dose of radiation turns me into.....

thats where I get stuck. Can't think of a good name or a good power either. So much for being a comic book hero. I think there's potential there, though. I mean, with all that the thyroid is supposed to do that it's not doing for me- I could definately use a super power. Don't you think?

Good thing I'll have several days to think about this while I'm locked in my house.

Logan Says:

Watching TV, switching between Jeopardy and the NBA Finals, a KFC commercial comes on showing mashed potatoes and gravy:

"Mmmm, that looks like LOVE!"

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Not a big deal.

so.... my first dose of I-131 wasn't really a big deal. Meaning- I don't glow in the dark, I haven't felt sick, and my day has been uneventful. I'm glad. I don't know what I was expecting, but I know I didn't want to be sick.

I've spent the day on my bed. Watched 'Dear John' and 1/2 of 'Avatar'. I'm glad I bought Avatar (edited) because I KNEW my boys would love it, and they do. But it just isn't the same on my tiny little bedroom TV as it was in the theatre. As for 'Dear John'- still LOVE IT! if I can't find anything decent to watch tonight, I may watch it again. (mental note- gotta get the soundtrack)

The tech at the clinic where I was admistered my pill this morning told me to suck lemon drops all day. She said sometimes the I-131 damages the salivary glands if the radiation just sits there. In order to keep them clean she said sour hard candy is good because it makes you salivate a lot. Well, I've been sucking them non-stop and my tongue and the roof of my mouth are not happy about it. But it must be working because tonight Gilbert brought me a grilled chicken breast (read previous post) and it was DELICIOUS!!!!! Fresh strawberries on the side- YUM!

and LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of water followed by bathroom breaks and triple flushes. TMI? Well that's what they told me to do to dilute the radiation I emit through so much water intake.

Aside from bouts of boredom- I've had a pretty decent day of 'No Worries'. Blogged a bit. Sketched a little. Wrote some instructions. Took a nap. Just tried to enjoy a phenomenon that NEVER happens when you have kids-

R E L A X A T I O N !

Early celebration

You know what happens when you start to celebrate early? You find out the celebration is going to be much later than you want. I don't know this yet, but it's what usually happens. So as I sit, super excited about my icky diet being over tomorrow- I know in my soul that the Dr. will probably tell me to stay on it for another week just in case I have to have another treatment. Ugh.

Here's a small list of what I've been eating the past week:

Water- I can have juice, too. But I prefer Water.
Chicken- grilled on the Foreman. Very yummy- but not e.v.e.r.y.d.a.y. blah
Fruit- Strawberries- YUM!!! Still not getting old. Unless I get a sour one, then I'm grumpy. Also apples, bananas, dried apricots. tonight? fresh pineapple on the Foreman. Uh, yeah- you heard me. :o)
Pepitas- Pumpkin seeds. Roasted/no salt. they have a naturally salty flavor that lasts for a milli-second. I'm getting tired of them too.
Home-made bread. not in my home though, are you nuts? I have a wonderful friend who made me 4 loaves of wheat bread with non-iodized salt. it's so yummy.
Jam- apricot or raspberry. it's become my new condiment of choice. it's great on the bread. Pretty good on the chicken (unless you're just plain tired of chicken), and makes the nasty crackers I have taste a little less nasty.
Organic PB- decent, when you're hungry enough. Pretty good on granny smith apple wedges.
Brite crawlers. Y'know, the sour gummy worms. This is my sweet of choice right now- because I CAN eat them. And I don't have to share with the kids because it's one of the only things I CAN have.
Cream of Wheat- no milk. not too bad. I usually cheat and put a tiny bit of milk and add a little water. I know, I know. but as long as it 'looks' like milk I'm fooled.

Last night I made a yummy mixture of fresh tomato and grilled chicken. It was suposed to have zuchinni in it, but my zuchinni was bad :o( Tomato and chicken, sauted with some garlic and a little pepper- YUM! a slice of wheat bread on the side. Almost cured my craving for the O.G. Except the wicked heart burn I got from that tomato. Yowza!

So I'm planning a celebration of the Olive garden on Wed. night. It's a splurge- but I deserve it. That is unless my Dr. crushes all my hopes and dreams by telling my to stick with the diet. Oh, it will be SO SAD. oh well, there's always next week I guess.

Tomorrow I become radioactive for 24 hours. i'm interested to see if it messed with the car radio at all. I'll let you know.

i'm getting bored with my food choices. I know there's more i CAN eat out there- there's just not a lot that i WANT to eat.

Atomic Mom

Just got the call from the Dr. saying my TSH levels are high enough to start treatment. I'll go in early Tues. for a low-dose and a scan. then back on friday for another scan to determine if I need a large dose or not.
Thankfully on tues. I'll only have to be away from the kids and everyone for 24 hours. Whew! iIm hoping that's all there is and that I'm free and clear after that, but we'll see.

P.s. Mom, remember that maternity dress you had with the little symbols all over so we called you 'Atomic Mom'? I'm thinking of hanging yellow caution tape in front of the house as a half-joke! :o)

the good and the NOT so good

I finally decided to call my Dr. and set a plan in motion. I have one more big step in this whole thyroid cancer nonsense to go through and that's the I-131 (radioactive iodine). Although I want to be done with all of this I know it's going to be a pain getting everything ironed out to make it happen. I guess that's why I've been procrastinating.

So today I go in for my blood work. My Dr. thinks my TSH levels should be in a good place or close considering I haven't been on thyroid meds for over 2 weeks. I need to be at a 30 or higher. Normal is usually in the range of 4-6. Here's the part I haven't been looking forward to- the 'Low- Iodine Diet' BAH! I'm hoping my levels are good so that I don't have to do this very long. Everything is SO bland. And I have to cook from scratch. EEK!

At least I can have unsalted butter, non-iodized salt, and sugar to add a little flavor flav to things. but absolutely NO Dairy or Bread (unless I make it myself). Yeah, like that's going to happen. I think I'll be taking a trip to 'Sunflower Market' to see what I can find!

back to my Roots

Is a root canal considered surgery? Based on how I feel, I sure hope it is. If anything I would like to add it to my list of 'procedures' in 2010.

Had my first (and hopefully, ONLY) root canal this morning. It took 3 1/5 hrs. Apparently I have strong teeth so that made it tough. Also, I have TMJ, so that added to it. I've never had a "rubber dam" before but thought of Becca and her dental-assisting days while getting worked on. Not only was the time in the office not fun, but I feel like I've been hit my a truck in my face.
Since I'm no stranger to getting banged up at least I know I won't feel like this forever.

And to all of you who say a root canal is 'No big deal'- I think that's info. you should keep to yourselves. I was completely blindsided :o)

BTW- the kids are enjoying their summer vacation and freedom while Mom lays on the couch with not much energy for anything.

Say YES to the dress!

Today I got to go dress shopping with Aunt Jesse! Preston says "technically shes not really our aunt...well, at least, not YET." geez that boy. Anyway, you know I would post a picture or two- but that would be cheating. What I will say is that I'm pretty sure she's found 'THE ONE!' :o)

It was fun to do that with her. I've really never been wedding dress shopping. When it was my turn I walked into a shop and they told me I would never find a dress like the one I wanted- uh, they were wrong. Just ask Jan Jacobsen to make it and it'll turn out perfect!!! When it was Al's turn I just searched the web and a few stores- but always by myself. This was fun. I think Jesse got tired/bored/annoyed/burned out pretty quick. But she did great. We looked at several dresses- including bridesmaids dresses. Afterwards we went for some yummy Cold Stone ice cream. I mean, why not!?

I would tell you all more- but I should leave something for Jesse to share. :o)

Slow motion

I feel like I'm moving in slow motion. Everything I try to do takes me twice as long. Oh how I would love to have some energy.

Shannon has TONS. She's already posted a little about out trip. She'll continue to post for the next few days. Someday I might get around to putting pics up on mine. But for now you can SEE and read all about it on http://itssewshannon.blogspot.com/

Have fun!

A converstaion with Paris

1:04 pm. [We had just finished lunch and I realized that not only did Paris clear her bowl, but scraped it and rinsed it as well]

Me: "Paris, thank you so much for clearing your bowl"

Paris: "Well I wasn't going to eat anymore"

Me: "Did I tell you how much I missed you when I was in Minnesota"

Paris: "No. But I really missed Shannon."

Me: jaw-dropped and speechless, but with a smile

Paris: "What? She's my friend!"

And what am I, chopped liver? :o)
Gotta love that girl!

Home again, home again

I tucked myself into my own bed around 11:30pm last night. What a week! Market was nice but exhausting. Just getting to MN was a chore.

Our flight from SLC took off and we headed to Denver. Unfortunately there was 'severe weather' including a tornado watch when we landed which meant an extra hour and 45 minutes sitting on the tarmack (sp?). It wasn't TOO bad. We were worried about missing out connection but since no plans were landing or taking off we were reasured that it would be fine. Finally we reached out gate and hurried off the plane. Except when we stopped at the 'Departure' screen our flight wasn't listed. Hmmm. We continued to walk towards our gate anyway. As soon as we got there the worker says "Shannon and Emily? hurry up. We were about to close the doors!" Whew.

We were 2 hours late arriving in MN. It was now 1:30am. Of course, the rental car counter was closer. We were told we needed to go to the 'OTHER' terminal. No one said it was 1/2 a mile to the light rail station- WITH ALL OUR BAGS! It was torture. We finally made it to the train and the other terminal only to find that they were all closed too. Well, except one. But my reservation was for $200 for the week and they wanted to charge $130/day. Uh, I don't think so. I finally decided to call the hotel (before resorting to a taxi) and they said they'd send the shuttle to pick us up! How fantastic was that. Wish we would have done that right off the bat. Oh well.

Finally arrived at the hotel and tucked ourselves into bed around 4 am. *sigh*

And that was only day 1! :o)

the big M

Tomorrow I'm headed to Minneapolis. I know, what was I thinking? Actually, when I planned and PAID FOR this trip I didn't know about the bumpy road ahead. That was back in Nov/Dec. had I known I was going to be having 2 surgeries and living without a thyroid at this time, I would have reconsidered. But now that all if my stuff is on a truck headed to MN, I feel a little bit better.

I'm taking my quilting-friend Shannon with me. She's a hoot! I'm going to have to feed off of her energy for this trip. Ever since this thyroid thing I've been drinking lots of soda. Lots for me, not lots of 'normal' soda drinkers. that means I have a couple drinks a week. I don't even have a preference anymore- as long as it has caffeine in it to give me a boost. I already prepped Shannon and told her "If I start to get cranky, send me out for a Coke!' (She's a diet coke addict along with the rest of the Utah Co. population)

I know once I'm there I'll have a blast and be so glad I went. But right now I just can't seem to pack.

What? A bunch of Bull?

OK, maybe not a bunch, but ONE!

Gilbert found out today that he 'drew' a bull moose tag. For those of you who are not hunters, make no mistake-

THIS IS A BIG DEAL!!!

Every year that Gilbert applies for a tag he gets a point. He's applied for many different animals including bear and mountain goat. Usually it takes several years to accrue enough points. However, it's still the luck of the draw. A few of Gilbert's friends have anywhere from 10-14 points and haven't drawn.

GILBERT HAS 2!

He's a lucky guy. He's been on cloud nine all night since he found out. This is major considering usually he's bad mouthing the DNR because he didn't draw anything. Although this means he's going to be putting a lot of time and effort into this 'BIG' hunt it's ok, because he deserves it. He's put in quite a few hours being Mr. Mom over the last couple months. There's been more than a couple mornings I've awaken to find he'd cleaned the kitchen before work. And he's becoming a regular at putting the kids to bed. He hasn't even complained about eating microwaved taquitos for dinner. So he definately deserved to get it.

P.S. he told me if they stay in cabins that I get to go on the hunt! I LOVE that idea (and I'm NOT being sarcastic) :o)

I haven't posted for a while- did you notice? :o) I was trying to forget about the month of April. It hasn't been great.

A few weeks ago I went to church and I was so annoyed at everyone asking how I was doing. Ugh. I felt GREAT except for everyone bugging me.

Now I don't mind people asking me because I can answer them honestly- I feel CRAPPY. Not having a thyroid sucks. The meds I'm on have side effects that make me feel even worse. Shakiness. Weak muscles. Depression. YUCK! So I decided to take a little less of the meds and guess what? Side-effects have lessened quite a bit. But now the sleepiness has returned. I came home from church today and slept for almost 4 hours.

So I haven't posted lately because I just don't have the energy. tomorrow I hope to talk with my Doc and get a different med. Hopefully that will make things a lot easier.

Tired

Over Easter weeked I wasn't feeling fantastic. As the days went on, it got progressivly worse. Monday was full of nausea and sleepiness. I had to push through and get myself together so I coould have another blood draw and see what my calcium levels were doing.

Too high! (Hence, the nausea)

Under Dr's orders headed to the ER. We got the run around- I'm too tired to go into details right now.

Eventually I was admitted for the night so I could have some IV fluids to help flush out the excess calcium. I didn't get to sleep until after 1am tues. morning. So sleepy.

They stopped the IV tues. around noon. Calcium was coming down, now just wait and see for one more night.

Planned on going home Wed morn. Had plans to get my hair colored and cut and some fun girl time with my BFF (Kids are at their cousins, Gilbert has to work late tonight).

But alas, Dr came in to tell me my calcium is now too low. I'm even twitching again. Wants me to stay ANOTHER NIGHT to make sure. My gosh-danged parathyroids are so out of whack they just don't know what they're going to do. Don't want to send me home and then have to re-admit me if it goes crazy either direction.

I slept good last night, but it's only quarter to 10 and I'm tired again. Thanks thyroid, or lack thereof.

Sigh.

A little less of me

And now I have no thyroid.

Ugh, waking up from surgery sucks. I think the pain was worse this time. Can that be true? I just wanted to stay asleep for a few days. Then the Dr's gave me the pain meds that make me feel crappy. I don't know why, but my body does not handle pain meds well. I try to tell the nurses that I don't want certain kinds and they don't understand. Why would I take something that is supossed to make me feel better, if it actually makes me feel worse. Doesn't make sense. Finally they listen and give me the morphine. I'm not a drug addict- I just know what works.

Sorry for not calling and talking to people. I just didn't feel up to it. today I feel better. It's weird to move my head a bit and feel pain in my neck though. My voice is almost normal which is amazing. Swallowing is still tender, but mostly in the muscles in my neck- not actually my throat. It's hard to explain.

Speaking of drug addicts- you should see my arm. My IV is in my lefty so they keep drawing blood from my righty. They're running out of places to stick me. I have to have my calcium checked several times a day. When it gets low my face gets tingly and sometimes my muscles twitch. It's strange. A couple of times my levels went up, but then dropped again. this is normal. They're going to give me vitamin D to help absorb the TUMS I've been eating. Mmmm, like candy. :o)

I feel tired. I wonder if this is from not having a thyroid and what I can expect to feel for the next few weeks. Time to take a nap.

Gratitude

When I first found out that I would be having surgery I didn't even consider the idea of having my Mom come out to help. I knew my recovery wouldn't be easy- but I also knew that Mom has lots going on at home in Cali and that it's a huge expense to travel to Utah. But when Mom volunteered to come take care of me I couldn't say 'NO'.

I am so full of gratitude for all that she does. As I was contemplating how much I appreciate her during this time my thoughts reflected on my own motherhood. There are so many times it feels like I do, do, do for my kids and they never appreciate it. I'm sure there were many years that my Mom felt this way towards me as I was growing up. Seeing how selfless my Mom is giving of her time and realizing the amount of love she has for me makes me wish I wasn't such a turd growing up. But I guess this is the way life goes. Without my own experiences as a mother I wouldn't appreciate my own Mother as much. All I can say is I don't know what I would do without her. And it gives me a little piece of mind thinking that someday my kids will appreciate all that I do for them.

She has kept my laundry under control,
loaded and unloaded the dishwasher (if you know Mom, you know what a step this is), :o)
entertain my wild kids,
let me take naps,
fold patterns for orders,
feed, take care of, and train the dog,
numerous trips to walmart,
my personal taxi driver,
gone to parent-teacher conferences with me,
bought the grandkids books at the book fair,
tucked my kids in at night,
bathed and showered my kids,
scrubbed my toilets,
vacuumed my floors,
endured countless attacks from a crazy cat,
shoveled said cat's litter box,
baked cookies,
baked MORE cookies,
bought groceries,
tended the kids so I could have date-night with Gilbert,
and many more things that I can't remember to list.

Sometimes it takes major life events to recognize the blessings you have. Through all of this I recognize the blessing of my Mom. I only hope that I can show her how much I love and appreciate all that she's done for me. Not just during this past week, but for the last 33 yrs.

Thanks Mom, I LOVE YOU!

McDreamy- I'm on my way!

Don't I wish!

Ok, so I am having surgery tomorrow- FOR SURE! But my surgeon is so far from McDreamy it's not even funny. Actually, he kinda reminds me of Mr. McFeely (That sounds gross!) from Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood!

They're taking my spleen and leaving my thyroid for another day. BAH! Those platelets just won't stay up enough for a surgery as vascualr as the thyroid. At first I was bummed- but I'm okay with it now. Better to be safe than sorry!

Wanna see what I'm taking with me to the hospital? Go HERE to see.

And when I come home? My mommy will be here to take care of me. :O)

Next time you hear from me I'll be spleen-less!

Monday, March 1, 2010

HA! HA! HA!

OK, that's not funny.

Just got off the phone with my Surgeon's nurse. No surgery tomorrow. My pre-op labs came back today and my platelet count SUCKS!!!!

I can say that- cuz it does. The lowest count they've gotten yet.

I guess those steroids didn't help much.

The only good thing is that tomorrow's weather is supossed to be the warmest day of the year so far. Glad the sun will be out.

:o(

Surgeon will talk with the hematologist tomorrow and decide what to do next. I'll keep you posted.

Totally Tuesday

Yes, I know today is not Tuesday. Just found out that Tuesday is the day I will have my surgery. Woo Hooo! Let's get the show on the road.

I am not in denial. I know this is not going to be an easy process. I am aware that I have never had major surgery before and that it will take my body some time to heal. I am also aware that not having a thyroid is not going to be an easy thing and that my body is going to do some things that I'm not happy about (ie- gain weight). But I also know that when all is said and done I will be 'Better'. I am looking forward to the 'someday' when that happens.

I'm thankful for all the countless blessings that I have- including all of you who have been praying and sending positive thoughts in my direction. It sounds totally cheesy but having something like this happen really does make you look at your life differently. For me I see the Lord's hand in everything. I KNOW that this experience is for my own learning and growth. I also know that I'll get through it all and be a stronger person afterwards because of it. And because I know those things I am looking forward to this operation, the recovery, and moving on.

As a side note- my arm is doing TONS better today. A little twinge here and there but nothing in comparison to two days ago. thank goodness!

PAIN in the....

Yesterday I had my appointment with the Hematologist. I was dreading this because I was 100% certain that nothing was going to get resolved at this appointment. I figured we'd go in, talk a bit, schedule some tests, and wait for another week or so before an official decision was made.

I was wrong.

After a quick blood draw; A short time waiting for the Dr.; Some 80 Gazillion questions; and a few pokes and prods; we finally got an answer.

Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
Basically I have low platelets. (Duh!) It's fairly common and very treatable. The good news- I'm cleared for surgery. WaaHooo! (Yes, I am glad about this. The sooner I can get it overwith, the better.)
However, because of the ITP the Dr. thought it best that I have a few vaccinations. Too lengthy to explain why- but no big deal. Well, so I thought.
I don't know if it was the particular meds, the manner in which I got my shots or WHO was giving me the shots but I am in an INCREDIBLE amount of pain today.
I can hardly move my right arm without shooting pains. Sleeping last night wasn't very fun because everytime I moved I hurt. This morning I was trying, ever so carefully to get dressed, and pain shot out so intense I thought I was going to throw-up. I have NEVER had pain like that before.
Seriously. I've been in labor 3 times and chose the epidural. If I could have an epidural on my arm I would. I also fell and bruised some ribs a few years ago. That was far worse than childbirth. But I can honestly say that thses shots have trumped even the bruised ribs.
HOLY HANNAH MONTANA MY ARM HURTS!!!
I hope after several doeses of Tylenol (the only thing I can take) and a few days of rest this pain will subside.

I QUILT

I quilt for many reasons.

Mostly because I love it. It brings me peace and sanity. It gives me a chance to create and see immediate results from my hard work.

In the last year it has become a blessed source of income for my family.

Please visit my ETSY shop and see some of my quilts: http://www.etsy.com/shop/crazyoldladies

I am hoping that by you seeing these quilts and passing this link on your friends who will then pass on to their friends and so on and so forth, that a few of these quilts can find new homes where they will bring joy to others.

Thanks.

Happy Valentine's Day

This was our Valentine's dinner tlast night. I made a chicken pot pie. Can you see the heart I pricked in it with the fork tines? ;o) I'm especially proud of this one because I made the crust from scratch. I usually used refrigerated pie crusts because I've had not-so-good experiences with home-made pie crusts in the past. But this one turned out great- (a little small) but flaky and tasty!
Today I gave the kids home-made valentines. But I don't have pictures because the kids took them apart and ate them too quickly. I carried on an idea that my Mom used to do for us kids and wrote a little note for each kid and attached a candy bar to it.
Preston's said: "Life is so much better with PEANUT in it!" (that's the nicname that I call him) I attached Peanut M&M's. He even gave me a couple AND a kiss (on the cheek) and hug. This is HUGE for him as he's recently decided that 'it's GROSS!' to kiss or hug his Mom. ;o)
Logan's said: "I'm not playing and TWIX on you- I love you! Don't forget- being 2nd is the BEST!" Obviously I attached a Twix candy bar and made reference to the 2 candies inside. This was good because just yesterday Logan had a meltdown about being the 2nd in the family. Today I assured him that being 2nd is AWESOME! I did refrain from teaching him the teasing rhyme: 1st the worse- 2nd the best! [Sorry Kris, it's SO true!] ;o)
Paris' said: "You fill me life with so much color- I wouldn't have it any other way!" and I attached a pack of Skittles. She told me her favorite candybar was 100Grand- but I couldn't find one. Oh, how I'll have fun with that as she gets older!
HAPPY VALENTINE's DAY!

Gas leak

To keep the theme from my last post:

Bella has gas.

I'm sitting here trying to eat my breakfast and all of a sudden I am overcome with the most awful smell. It lingers in the air for minutes- thick as pea soup (except you can't see it).

It finally goes away and I can breathe again.

Only moments later the smell is back.

I put Bella outside to do "work" and hopefully clean her pipes.

The air is fresh again (as fresh as it can be in a house that desperately needs cleaning).

I'm afraid to let her back in.

Wed. 8:10 am

Logan: I had quite an experience this morning.....dropping the kids off at the pool.

Mom: Really?

Logan: Yes. They were long and green.

Mom: Did they end up down the drain?

Logan: Yep. I flushed.

I know, not the most 'appropriate' blog post for breakfast time. But it made me laugh.

Penny Pinching

The other day my VT came over. She happens to have the same floorplan as our house. As we visited she happened to mention to me a wonderful idea she had about some minor home remodeling. And you know how I am. I fell in love with her idea and asked if I could 'steal' it. Of course, she said YES.

But of course, when I pitched the idea to my husband he was much less excited than me. He told me that we could start demolition as soon as I finished about 100 other unfinished projects around the house. I told him it was a deal as long as I only finished projects that I didn't have to spend money on.

The last 2 days I have been BUSY! A little caulk here, some paint touchup's there. Don't forget the trim!

Last night I showed him all of my progress- he was very impressed. Of course, I was only halfway through the finishing process. However, he was sold and we started demolition.

The coolest thing about this new project is that it should cost us less that $10 to finish. And once you see what we did and what we DIDN'T spend- you're going to be AMAZED!

Although, at the rate I finish projects it may be 2012 before you see the "AFTER" pictures!

JUST KIDDING! (Geez, Gilbert would kill me!) :o)

And my house isn't the only thing getting a re-model........

The Aftermath

I didn't yell and scream. I calmly told him what was expected and he agreed. Then he went to bed.
This morning he woke with a smile on his face and even told me he loved me when I dropped him off at school.
As soon as he came home he got to work. It took him all afternoon. But after a quick run to the store I came home to this.

Aaaahhhhh. I can rest for a moment- that battle is over.

But I won't hold my breath, I'm sure another is on it's way. I'll enjoy the calm while I have it! :o)

What would you do...

If your almost 8yr old son's room looked like this!?

Would you believe that just yesterday I walked into that room and sang praises to him because it was so clean and organized?

Tonight he got mad when I told him it was time to go to bed. He began screaming and yelling at me so I told him he could stay in his room and I shut the door. I heard some banging and an hour later opened the door to find this. Actually, this was after we moved the matress back on him bed. It was on top of the pile. Everything he has in his room and closet is in this pile.

Parenting advice- PLEASE!!!

Name Game

I recently designed a quilt and I need some name suggestions. It's going to be featured in an Australian magazine in December. I can't show a picture of it but it's mainly primary colors. The theme for that issue is a seaside/beach theme. I know there are certain people out there that happen to read this blog that have been to Australia. If you have any ideas- please send them my way. But ideas from anyone and everyone are welcome.

THANKS!

Just a spoonful of sugar!

Wednesday night is datenight. That's the night that most weeks Gilbert and I go out with our friends Mike and Jeanne (BFF). This week we decided to 'stay in' and watch recorded episodes of 'Border Wars' at their house. I told them I would bring some dessert. Gilbert suggested sugar cookies.

It's been a while since I made sugar cookies. So I pulled out my 'Joy of Cooking' cookbook and set to work. I even had a canister of pink frosting and valentine sprinkles to decorate the cookies and since the ONLY cookie cutter I could find was a heart, it was perfect!

I was paritally into my dough-making when I ran into a dilemma. Me, having talents only outside the kitchen, decided to call the best baker I know for advice- my Mom. "It calls for 1 large egg, and I only have medium eggs. What do I do?" We discussed for a bit and since she had company told me she would call me back. I just added another half and egg and called it good.

A pinch of this and a dash of that and my dough was almost done. Except it was dry- REALLY dry. The recipe called for 1 tbsp. milk. I added 3-4 more just trying to soften the dough.

Jeanne called in the meantime "So, what are you making?" she asked. I told her I was making sugar cookies. "Mmmm, my fave! I was thinking of making caramel popcorn...unless Mike wants something more salty." She replied. Then Mom beeped through on the other line.

"Mom, I fixed the egg problem, but this dough is so dry." At this point I decided to give the dough a taste.

FLASHBACK TO A FEW WEEKS EARLIER:

I was trying to organize my cupboards after all the holiday baking. While doing so I found a sandich sized ziploc full of sugar in my cupboard. Actually, I wasn't SURE it was sugar. But I remember opening the bag and smelling it and thinking I should taste it. At this point my memory gets a little fuzzy because I don't actually remember tasting it. But the logic in my head goes something like this:

It could be sugar, it could be salt. They look identical. However, salt comes in a cylindrical canister and stays there until it's gone. Why would I pour it into a baggie? Sugar, on the other hand, comes in a paper sack. If my trusty sugar-holding tupperware was running low, I would buy a 5lb. bag of sugar to fill it (I don't bake that often*). Maybe I poured as much sugar as I could into the tupperware and there was still a bit left. So I poured it into a ziploc to keep it fresh thinking I would add it to the tupperware when there was room. But I forgot about it until now. Anyway, I poured it unto the sugar container.

FAST FORWARD BACK TO WEDNESDAY:

So I tasted the dough and you can imagine what I found: PLAY DOUGH! My wonderful sugar-cookie dessert was actually playdough because the baggie of sugar was not sugar afterall. IT WAS SALT! But again I ask myself- Why did I have a baggie of salt (a LOT of salt) in my cabinet?

I contemplated baking a couple anyway because Jeanne had mentioned that Mike may want something salty. But instead I just dumped it in the garbage. If not for the eggs that were added to the recipe I would have kept it for the kids to play with.

The best part is I smiled throughout the whole disaster. I mean, it is quite comical, would'nt you say?

* Now you know why! :o)

Paris Lillian 4 3/4

She's mine and I love her!

Everytime I get my camera out to take a picture of a quilt this girl HAS to have her picture taken too. As soon as the button clicks she HAS to see it. Oh, she was so mad when she saw this one because there was a stack of quilts next to her and she wanted them in the pic too. But I didn't want those quilts to share the frame with her.
This picture says so many things.
This is how Paris looks most days. Hair all crazy and all. I'm lucky I got her to let me pull it back into a pony to keep it out of her face. If you saw the bright pink tu-tu she had on and the brown footless tights you would laugh at her sense of style. But she insists on dressing that way AND wearing it to Walmart. That smile. That smile that gets her anything she wants. Well, almost anything.
Most of all it says:
My baby is growing up! But she sure is beautiful. :o)

Last week the boys brought papers home from school confirming SEP (Parent/teacher conferences) times for Thurs.

I should've known.

It wasn't until wednesday when I realized that they would be out of school on Friday.

Why didn't I remember that?

Luckily a parent mentioned that they had Monday off, too.

What the heck am I going to do with all the kids home for 4 days in a row!? I just sent them back!

Enter: Grandma and Grandpa Herrick

I neglected to check the caller ID and almost missed having G&G Herrick come down for a visit.

The kids were so excited. I actually got them to help me clean the house! (MIRACLE!)

We've had a nice visit. G'ma took Paris to the mall. We had hamburgers, hotdogs, and potato salad. Dad brought home cookies from 'The Chocolate'. Bella's recieved lots of love.

G&G go home tomorrow (sunday) night.

What am I going to do about Monday!?

Oh, Hello 20-10

What can I say for the first week of the new year?

"Eh"

That's it.

What's so special about another year? Same ol' stuff- different day.

Oh, I have goals this year- the same ones I made last year, the year before that, and the year before that. You get what I'm saying, right?

Why am I so negative right now?

BECAUSE MY KIDS WON'T GO TO BED!!!

Change THAT 20-10!
